Dear Friend,
I knew the 25th season would be a most significant one in New Rep's history. Now, we have even more exciting news to add to this already thrilling season.
The San Jose Repertory Theatre, a LORT theatre in Northern California, approached me about joining them as their Artistic Director, and I have accepted the position.
While this was not an easy decision to make, it gave me great encouragement to know that this is an amazing time for New Rep to make this type of change. We are coming off the highest-attended and most successful season in our history, we are firmly established in our new home in Watertown at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, and we are strengthening our future with the Next Stage Initiative.
New Rep remains deeply committed to honoring the great tradition of presenting inspiring, challenging, relevant, thought-provoking and entertaining productions. Our mission is clear and our passion to achieve it is strong.
New Rep's Board of Directors, staff, and I will be working with a hiring firm in a national search for my successor, and I will remain as New Rep's artistic advisor until my successor is named. I will remain Acting Artistic Director for New Rep for the entire 2008-2009 Season and will still direct the New Rep productions that I am slated to work on this season. My service to San Jose Rep also begins this season, but as with any artist, I thrive on juggling multiple projects.
New Rep is strong not because of any one person, but because we have all worked to achieve a magical synthesis of artists, administrators, and audience members. We all make New Rep the phenomenal theatre that it is.
For over a decade, New Rep has been my home, playground, family, and friends. You have all inspired, challenged, and entertained me. I thank you all for your amazing loyalty to me, to New Rep, and to the wonderful world of live theatre. For now, I look forward to an amazing season at New Rep. There will be much to discuss as we discover what is unique about each of this season’s featured playwrights and the great stories they have to tell.
