New Rep Gala 2016

You’re invited to Étoile, a sparkling evening celebrating New Rep!

Arsenal Center for the Arts
MAY 10/2016 at 6:30pm

The New Rep Gala held on Tuesday, May 10 was a picturesque spring evening and a joyous celebration in a tent under the stars in front of the Arsenal Center for the Arts. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the melodious sounds of a student string trio from the Suzuki School of Newton in the tent decorated in blues and whites with gorgeous bright pink flowers from Blossoms. Tables were supplied with dishes of cranberry nut mix provided by Fastachi.

Taste buds were tickled with delicious food provided by our restaurant partners, Farmer’s Market Kitchen, Fiorella’s, Not Your Average Joe’sSensational Foods, Stellina Restaurant, Terry O’Reilly’s, and Wild Rice.

A yearly tradition, Premier Bartending & Beverage Service supplied a signature drink for the evening called “Twilight Blue” which featured blue curaçao, vodka, and white cranberry juice.

Guests tried their luck for exciting prizes at the Mystery Box table, found bargains at the Win It Now table, bid on silent and special Galaxy Auction items, and took home surprise bottles of wine at the Wine Spin table.

Legit Band, a jazz trio led by Ron Vanaria, and dancers from Ballroom in Boston added a flair of ambiance and drew delighted guests to the dance floor.

Comcast/xfinity, our Headliner Sponsor, was on hand broadcasting the program on four 80-inch screens around the tent so all had a fantastic view of the proceedings.

Leigh Barrett kicked things off with a sultry rendition of “Mack the Knife” accompanied by Matthew Stern on piano. Board Chair, Chip Phinney and Artistic Director, Jim Petosa welcomed guests and remarked on the outstanding turnout for the event and guests commitment to New Rep.

Our distinguished honorees were highlighted in videos produced by Comcast/xfinity before they took to the stage to accept their awards. Former honoree, Marcy Crary appeared in a video highlighting the contributions of this year’s Karoff Leadership Award recipient, New Rep Board Member, Miriam Gillitt WinerJim Petosa gave praise to Baltimore playwright Kirsten Greenidge in a pre-taped piece and before presenting her with the Rising Star Award live on stage. And finally, last year’s Community Advocate award winner WGBH’s CEO and President, Jon Abbott appeared on-screen to shine a light on the work of this year’s Community Advocate award winner, State Representative Jonathan Hecht who followed with a passionate speech about the importance of arts organizations like New Rep in our community.

A rousing performance piece by the Classic Repertory Company led by Education Associate, Hayley Sherwood shared their experiences on the road. Moving quotes and true stories highlighted the impact of live theatre on students, teachers, and the company themselves as artists. They collected gifts benefitting our Fund a Future initiative.

The presentation concluded with a charming rendition of “Miracle of Miracles” from Fiddler on the Roof by New Rep favorite, Nick Sulfaro.

Guests then enjoyed goodies and treats from Whole Foods to end their night on a sweet note.

We are proud to announce that we raised $105,000 at New Rep Gala 2016! We could not have done it without the passion and dedication of our Board, Gala Co-Chairs, Gala Committee, Honorary Committee, Sponsors, Local Business Partners, volunteers, and staff.

We look forward to sharing our work on stage and in the community with you throughout the year!

#1 Victoria Britt, Actor The Snow Queen

1516_VictoriaBritt_webCrabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer

The ginger is very spicy, just the way I like it, and it feels similar to having a ‘dark and stormy.’ I recommend pouring over ice and adding lime.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

The Princess Bride is brilliantly written by William Goldman, full of rich characters and incredible wit.

Little Voice, Sara Bareilles

“Gravity,” “Love on the Rocks,” and “Between the Lines” are my favorite tracks, but every song is a winner.

#2 Aimee Doherty, Actor The Snow Queen

1516_AimeeDoherty_webMontenidoli Vernaccia Tradizionale

Not only is this wine delicious, it is also environmentally friendly. Elisabetta Fagiuoli organically farms her grapes in Tuscany.

Passing by Nella Larsen
I couldn’t put this novel down. I finished it in two days.

Fun Home, Original Broadway Cast Recording

It was the first musical ever to win a Tony for Best Score with an all-female writing team, and I had the great pleasure of working with original cast member (Joel Perez) at New Rep in CABARET.

#3 Benjamin Evett, Actor Broken Glass

1516_BenjaminEvett_webMark West Pinot Noir
It’s a really lovely bottle that doesn’t have the usual berry heavy notes of California Pinots, and is more like the lighter, spicier European style wines.

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

A weird, wonderful, epic love story by one my favorite authors of magical realism.  It’s almost indescribably strange, moving and beautiful.

10 Cent Wings, Jonatha Brooke

It’s fantastic alternative folk pop from 1997.  Her lyrics, a lot of which deal with her father, are rich, clever, and thought-provoking.

#4 Anne Gottlieb, Actor Broken Glass

This is Spain’s dry retort to Italy’s often overly sweet Prosecco. It’s ideal for sipping in the summer.

The Mask of Apollo by Mary Renault

Mary Renault plays easily with delicious detail describing gossiping actors (not much has changed in that area since the 4th century) and the great treasures and philosophies of the Ancient Greek world.

My Song, Keith Jarrett

When I was rehearsing Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune at New Rep, our director asked us to bring in a few examples of music that elicited a feeling of beauty. I brought in Keith Jarrett’s My Song.  You will stop me in the street and thank me for recommending Keith Jarrett’s My Song to you. My favorites are the title track, My Song and the track Country.

#5 Jeremiah Kissel, Actor Broken Glass

1516_JeremiahKissel_webTrader Joe’s Bourbon

Light, smooth, has a nice finish, and is a great sipping whiskey.  Also, isn’t shopping at Trader Joe’s good for the environment or something?

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
The book is a great western with a strong sense of good and evil, that has its core two characters, who, at their advanced age, prove that experience and treachery will almost always defeat youth and skill.

A Fiddler’s Holiday With The Jay Ungar & Molly Mason Family Band
The music has in its soul all the blood, loyalty, and patriotism of America as it wars with itself. Sad but inspiring too. And timely.

#6 Adrianne Krstansky, Actor Blackberry Winter

1516_AdrianneKrstansky_webPeet’s Coffee Major Dickason’s Blend

Where would we be without coffee?  And, oddly, I have about five actor friends who all love this brand.

To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

This book reinvented storytelling for me.

Six Sonatas for the Cello & Piano, Antonio Vivaldi, Ashima Scripp (cello)  Eleanor Perrone  (piano)

Completely inspirational .  Ashima Scripp is the daughter of a dear friend and this CD came into my life at a time when I very much needed it.

#7 Paula Langton & Ken Cheeseman, Actors Blackberry Winter

Highland Park Scotch (Paula)
Made in Orkney – where my voice teacher, Kristin Linklater lives – magical place to visit.

Berkshire Brewing Company Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale (Ken)

The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker (Paula)
Reads like a thriller and loaded with practical information that could save your life.

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino (Ken)

Lady At the Bottom of the Hill, Milton (Paula)
One of my favorite Berkshire musicians and a good friend.

Bright As You Can,  The Mike & Ruthy Band (Ken)

#8 Nael Nacer, Actor A Number

KMBT_C454-20150422135744Kona Brewing Company Longboard Island Lager
I first had it in Hawaii on my honeymoon, and whenever I drink it now it instantly takes me back. It’s light, crisp, and delicious and goes well with anything.

Tenth of December by George Saunders

This is a dark and beautifully-observed collection of short stories that are filled with warmth and humanity. This book is tragic, strange, and incredibly funny.

Alice, Tom Waits

The music was written and composed for a musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, directed by Robert Wilson. It’s fun to try to solve the puzzle of how the songs fit into the story we’re all familiar with.

#9 Bridget Kathleen O’Leary, New Rep Associate Artistic Director, Director, Blackberry Winter

1415_BridgetOLeary_square_NNPNBogle Pinot Noir
In the summer my husband and I spend our weekends with my Aunt and Uncle at Northwood Lake in New Hampshire.  We go up every Memorial Day weekend to open it up, and for the past few summers we’ve celebrated the event by opening a bottle.

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
When I was 3 years old we moved in with my grandmother The book convinced me that all of my stuffed animals were real – which means that even as an adult, there are a few I can’t bear to part with for fear that I would be abandoning an old friend.

Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits, Billy Joel
Billy Joel was one of my father’s favorites, and he I used to sing along to that CD in the summers when I would go visit him in Florida.  When I was younger I used to think that “Movin’ Out” was written for my father who was Sergeant O’Leary.

#10 Maurice Emmanuel Parent, Actor The Snow Queen

Headshot - 2Chocolate Stout

My favorite.

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
My favorite book of literature going WAY back to high school.

Individuality (Can I Be Me), Rachelle Ferrell

#11 Jim Petosa, New Rep Artisitic Director, Director, Broken Glass The Testament of Mary and Freud’s Last Session

Jim Petosa_StanBarouhMeiomi Pinot Noir

I like a “fun” wine…and this one allows you to really taste the fruit that makes it up.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
This book changed my perception on what a novel can do as a work of art.

New York Philharmonic Mahler Symphony No.2, conducted by Leonard Bernstein

The Mahler is essential music.  It opens up the universe to the imagination.

#12 Jon Savage, Scenic Designer, Broken Glass

Jon SavageSancerre Wine
Hemingway wrote of this wine in A Moveable Feast.  It is a French white wine served cold and, according to Papa, pairs beautifully with raw oysters.

A Movable Feast by Earnest Hemingway

A memoir of his early days as an expatriate writer in Paris In the 1920’s. It recounts Hemingway’s interaction with other notable artists such as Gertrude Stein, F Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound among many others.

La Vie en Rose, Motion Picture Soundtrack

Edith Piaf’s music was the soundtrack to Hemingway’s Paris.
