New Rep On Tour Announces its Fall Production
The Scarlet Letter

October 11, 2010

New Rep On Tour is pleased to announce it will open its eleventh season with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s great American classic The Scarlet Letter adapted by Paul Stacey.  The fall Tour will travel to over a dozen Boston area schools and reach over 8,000 students

“I am thrilled to be bringing live professional theatre into classrooms with the Tour,” states Kate Warner, Artistic Director for New Rep.  “New Rep On Tour is a wonderful program that exposes children to theatre, some for the very first time. I am so proud that we have been offering this valuable program to local schools for over ten years.”

Ms. Warner adds, “It has been wonderful working with Paul Stacey, who created this 90 minute adaptation for his thesis at the A.R.T. Institute/Harvard.  Between Paul Stacey’s brilliant adaptation and the talented cast we assembled for this production,  and I know they will capture the significance of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.”

In a small Puritanical New England town, Hester Prynne causes a scandal by giving birth to an illegitimate child and refusing to identify the father. This great American classic is a searing exploration of adultery, sin, and forgiveness in which Hawthorne creates America’s first true heroine.

New Rep On Tour brings high quality professional productions of relevant plays from the dramatic and literary canon to area schools, in accordance with DOE Curriculum frameworks, and onto the stages of local High Schools and Middle Schools in special 90-minute adaptations.  Following each performance, the artists lead a talkback session, allowing students to ask questions and discuss the important topics of the play.  Teachers have come to rely on the Tour as an annual event in their schools, and student testimonials describe the widespread enthusiasm for these productions.

New Rep On Tour, now in its 11th season, has performed for over 88,000 students. New Rep On Tour’s mission is to bring high quality professional productions of relevant plays from the dramatic and literary canon to area schools.

New Rep on Tour is proud to have Bank of America as its Educational Outreach Sponsor, building on a long history of partnership.

“We are excited to continue our support of New Rep’s impactful education programs, which will bring live theatre to thousands of students in the Greater Boston area.  At Bank of America, we believe the arts, in all its forms, should be shared with the widest possible audience,” said Robert E. Gallery, president, Bank of America Massachusetts.

New Repertory Theatre can offer its vital programming thanks to the additional generosity of individuals and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Clarks Companies, The Roy A. Hunt Foundation, The Fuller Foundation, The Harvard/O’Neill Community Enrichment Fund, Crossroads Community Foundation, J. Stallone Realty Group, The Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the Local Cultural Councils of Billerica, Brookline, Burlington, Cambridge, Reading, Scituate, and Sturbridge.
