New Repertory Theatre announces “Pay What You Can” nights for its 2006/07 season. “Pay What You Can” is scheduled on the final dress rehearsal night for each show, offering audiences a sneak peek before the shows open. The first “Pay What You Can” performance is The Pillowman on Tues. September 5 at 7:30 p.m. Seating is general admission, and limited to capacity, and “Pay What You Can” tickets are available for cash only at the box office on the day of the performance, up to 30 minutes before curtain. The suggested minimum ticket price is $5. Guaranteed advance tickets are available now for $25 by calling 617-923-8487.

Said Producing Artistic Director Rick Lombardo, “It’s vitally important that we keep the theater experience affordable for everyone – especially younger people and those on a limited budget. Theatre has always been a very democratic art form, and we hope that this initiative will allow our work to be seen by a wider audience.”

The Pillowman, the highly celebrated, Tony-Award winning, viciously funny black comedy by Anglo-Irish writer Martin McDonagh, explores the deepest, darkest corners of imagination, examining the tension between fantasy and reality. It tells the hilarious and horrifying story of Katurian (played by John Kuntz), a writer living in a totalitarian state whose ghoulish stories suddenly seem to be blueprints for a series of grisly child murders taking place. As the writer faces interrogation by a good cop/bad cop team employing very unconventional techniques, the central question – is an artist responsible for outcomes when life imitates art? – emerges. Lombardo directs; Cast includes John Kuntz, Steven Barkhimer and Phillip Patrone.

The Pillowman runs from September 6 through October 1, with performances Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Wednesdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. Tickets start at $30.

“Pay What You Can” nights for the rest of the season are: The Ice-Breaker on October 24, 2006; Silence on January 16, 2007; Orson’s Shadow on February 20; and The Wild Party on April 24.

The Arsenal Center for the Arts is located at 321 Arsenal Street in Watertown. This is New Rep’s second season as the resident company at the new Arsenal Center. The facility is ADA-compliant.
