June 27, 2007
The New Repertory Theatre is excited to announce that Jonathan Colby will appear its first-ever summer show, Side By Side By Sondheim, a revue of Stephen’s Sondheim’s most beloved songs. The show opens for the press on July 9, 2007 and plays through July 22, 2007 at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown.
Jonathan Colby is a senior musical theatre major at Emerson College, where he has been hosting the popular morning show Standing Room Only, an all-show tunes radio station for WERS Emerson Radio, for over two years. As an actor, he has appeared in productions of several local theatres, and is making his New Rep debut this summer, using his skill as a radio DJ to fill the role of the Narrator in this revue of Stephen Sondheim’s best.
“After a year of terrific growth, we are eager and excited to add a summer show to our season and provide the Boston theatre community with fantastic New Rep productions year-round,” says Rick Lombardo, New Rep’s Producing Artistic Director. Side By Side By Sondheim will be directed by Rick Lombardo and will be musically directed by Todd C. Gordon, both of whom recently received IRNE awards for their collaboration on Ragtime last spring. They are currently collaborating on The Wild Party this season. Side by Side by Sondheim will feature Leigh Barrett, Brendan McNab, and Maryann Zschau.
Celebrating the genius of one of Broadway’s most influential and legendary composer-lyricists, Side By Side By Sondheim is a fantastic revue of some of Stephen Sondheim’s best-remembered songs from his most famous shows including Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Follies, and A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, alongside some of his lesser-known songs that were cut from shows or were never produced. Also featured are some of his lyrics he provided for songs by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rodgers, Mary Rodgers and Jule Styne. Tied together with a simple narration revealing interesting facts about the composer’s life and his shows, this light, yet stunning collection of Sondheim’s work is a must-see for any musical theatre fan.
